The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to install global positioning system (GPS) on the garbage-lifting vehicles to keep a check on these and the working of employees.
The MC had been getting complaints from residents that garbage was not being removed from various parts of the city, following which the civic body took the decision to install GPS on garbage-lifting vehicles.
For the purpose, the MC will engage operators, which are on the panel of the government.
A senior MC official said once GPS was installed in vehicles, senior officials would be able to track their daily movement. Initially, the system would be implemented on a trial basis, the official said.
During the two public grievance redressal meetings of the Municipal Corporation, which were held in Sector 22 and Mani Majra, a majority of residents had apprised MC Commissioner B Purushartha of poor garbage lifting in their areas.
According to the proposal, the department concerned will keep an eye on the movement of garbage lifting vehicles. Senior officials would also be able to track their movement on mobile phone.
